All researchers using the Library and its services must create an account in Aeon, the library's online system. Review the terms and conditions below, then click the Continue to Registration Form button at the bottom of the page.

In-Person Research

Researchers ages 18+ may use the Library's reading rooms upon establishing a research need that requires the use of The Huntington's collections, identifying specific materials, and presenting the required form(s) of identification at orientation.
1. Find library collections and materials for your research with Summon Discovery, or contact the library for assistance.
2. If you will be using rare materials during your visit, use your Aeon account to request the materials for delivery to the Special Collections Reading Room. Visit the Aeon guide for step-by-step instructions.
3. New researchers and renewing readers must schedule a brief orientation to obtain a library card and review library procedures. Visit the Reader Services Calendar to request an appointment.

Virtual Reading Room

Remote researchers must create an Aeon account to access and request materials for the library's Virtual Reading Room service. This is a free, one-hour online session that allows remote researchers to view materials from the Huntington Library's rare collections.
Visit the Virtual Reading Room page for more information and to request an appointment.

Imaging Services and Permissions Policy

The Huntington Library provides reproductions of rare materials to all researchers. Visit the Imaging Services guide to learn how to use Aeon to order reproductions. Refer to the Price List (PDF) for image format options and fee schedule.
Requests for reproductions are fulfilled to the extent allowed by the physical condition of the item and the provisions of existing copyright law. Requests for Imaging Services may be denied if scanning or photography would damage the materials or infringe on other restrictions.
Researchers quoting from or reproducing images of Library materials agree to abide by the Library's Rights and Permissions policy. Note that some older catalog records and finding aids may contain obsolete permissions language.

Notice on Data Collection

The Huntington Library may retain indefinitely information we collect from you in connection with your use of rare material, including registration, circulation, imaging services requests, as well as other Huntington-related correspondence. Your information will not be shared with other parties except to address issues pertaining to the legality, security, and the administration of the collections.
